About Excavation Equipment
An excavator is a specialized, high-powered machine that is used to move, transport and dig up dirt, rocks, gravel, and other materials. It usually takes the form of a tracked or wheeled vehicle with a large articulating arm with a bucket and teeth used for digging trenches and holes. Did you know that today’s modern excavators evolved from the early steam shovel used in the early 20th century? It’s true!
Excavating equipment can do many things besides just dig trenches and holes. They also give us the ability to dredge rivers, handle different heavy materials, conduct open pit mining, cut brush, vegitation and trees, lift heavy objects and pipes, general demolition, and landscaping and grading jobs.
Like other types of machines, hydraulic excavating equipment comes in many different shapes and sizes suitable for different jobs and tasks. Some mini (or compact) excavators are so small that they can fit though an average doorway to perform tasks inside of buildings. And the largest excavators, which are relied upon for big jobs like open pit mining, can weigh hundreds of thousands of pounds and come equipped with buckets that are several meters wide.
Different Uses For Excavating Equipment
As excavation equipment technology advances, we are seeing excavators being used for many new tasks other than just digging and moving heavy materials. Excavators are now capable of being fitted with hydraulic attachments like augers, grapples and breakers that greatly increase the number of specialized tasks they are able to perform. And these attachments are usually very easy to affix on the equipment, too, thanks to new quick-mounting systems that make implementation a breeze.
On the construction site, hydraulic excavating equipment is often used in tandem with other heavy construction and earthmoving equipment such as bulldozers and loaders. Smaller excavators are sometimes equipped with wheels instead of tracks, and they also sometimes are fitted with a dozer or backfill blade. This blade is used to push dirt, rocks and gravel back into a trench or hole, and is usually attached to the undercarriage of the excavator.
When it comes to basement waterproofing, our top-of-the-line excavating equipment allows Lorain County Sewer and Drain to dig trenches around the foundation of your home quickly and safely for the installation of basement footer drains or french drains. Our excavators also give us the ability to dig down and repair, replace or install any sewer main lines, pipes and cleanouts in your yard without spending huge amounts of time and labor gettng the job done.
About Trench Digging And Construction
As you probably are aware, a trench is a long, deep depression in the ground. Trenches are almost always less deep than they are wide, and they play an important functionary role in many different areas of agriculture, construction, archaeology, geology, infrastructure, plumbing, waterproofing and military measures. Did you know that trenches were so important to the comforts and necessities we rely upon in our every day lives?
For our purposes we are most interested in a the ability of a trench for draining and leading water away from homes or structures and leading it to another location. Trenches also play a huge role in construction, plumbing and infrastructure maintenance, and without our specialized excavation equipment, it would be much more difficult for us to search for pipes, sewer drains, gas lines and water lines that we know is in a general location.
Trenches are also dug by numerous companies to place utilities that are easily damaged underneath the protection of layers of earth, such as water mains, gas mains, sewer mains and even telephone lines. And of course, digging trenches is often one of the first things we do when it’s necessary to work on your basement foundation wall for waterproofing purposes.
